Live Music

Friday I saw my first live band ever, The Wailin Jennys. They were really good. I had a revelation though. I love live music, but I hate live bands. I don’t like knowing what my favorite artist look like, talk like, believe in, etc. It takes away from the music for me.

  1. You’ll have to wear a blindfold then every time you go to a concert.

Seriously though, I know what you mean. It’s kind of like seeing a radio personality in person.

  2. Exactly. I imagine what they look like and I’m always disapointed. Same thing with music videos. When I was a teen I was obsessed with MTV (when they actually played videos). Now the video ruins the story I made up about the song.

  3. I have only once been incredibly impressed by a band that I loved that I saw in concert. The lead singer was a hottie! After the concert, I was telling my friend how incredibly hot he was and he was standing 5 feet behind me. I was mortified, but he was grinning. Every time I listen to one of their songs, I remember what a dork I am.

  4. With all due respect, this is the one of the most absurd things I’ve ever heard. Seeing a band live is what music is all about. A song or an album is strictly a way to capture a moment in time, a highly manipulated moment at that. A live performance is where you witness the true power of a band….regardless of how they look. It’s this obsession with image (and digital downloading) that has strangled everything we should love about music.

  5. You are probably into music more than I am. I just want to hear the music. When I read a book, I’m not interested in the author’s feelings. I don’t care what an actor does to get into a character.

  6. I understand that. It’s cool. I’m not wanting to say there’s a right or a wrong. My point of view is simply that, I feel, you get more out of the music when you see the band pouring their sweat, blood and total commitment into a live show. It’s okay to just strictly want to be entertained and not wonder what goes on “behind the scenes”.
