I read 8 books in July, including my 2 boring but interesting textbooks. Taking classes and doing homework really limits my reading time. One more reason to hate school, though now that it is over I don’t hate school anymore. Isn’t that the way it is?

The best books were Nappily Ever After by Trisha Thomas and Up Close and Dangerous by Linda Howard. Nappily Ever After will soon be a movie staring Halle Berry. The main character goes through a rough time in life and decides to start fresh by cutting off all her hair and letting it grow back natural. The book highlighted how important hair is to woman and black women in particular. Having good hair is ingrained in the culture, you spending thousands of dollars a year on it, put yourself through hours of pain, and avoid activities that may mess your hair up. Most interesting were people’s reactions to her. Some people thought she was having a mental breakdown, which is what every TV pop-psychologist said about Britney Spears. Some people thought she was coming out of the closest. The saddest reactions were people who not longer thought she was attractive, without her hair she was just a plain unnoticeable woman. But as a prereq of any book I read voluntarily, it ends happily or nappily ever after. It was a great book and I can’t wait to see the movie and read the sequel.
