Learning new things

Man-I love learning new things. Here is what I learned from the Testosterone Factor, an episode of National Geographic Channel Explorer. Hold up your hand and look at your ring finger and your index finger. If your ring finger is longer than your index finger, you were exposed to high levels of testosterone in the womb. This has correlated with having a high sperm count, assertiveness in women, and athletic ability.

I know that correlation isn’t cause & effect, but still isn’t that nifty information?

Remind me to show you my neuropsych text. There’s a lot of correlation between human behavior and testosterone. Things like spatial ability are tied to testosterone and handedness and other stuff. This American Life did a testosterone show: http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?episode=220

Umm, help me out. How is one exposed to high levels of testosterone in utero? Is Mom juicing to try out for American Gladiators?

However it happens, apparently my mother wasn’t hopped up on that particular hormone while carrying me, as my ring finger is shorter than my index. I don’t want to touch that first trait, the second doesn’t apply, but in the third case I now know why I’m not in the NHL pulling down the big bucks. I always thought it was my lack of size, my weak slap shot, and my tendency to block my own teammates’ shots when trying to set a screen. Now I realize that I have a testosterone deprivation disability. Perhaps I can sue someone.
