Letters

I visited my sister-in-law and nephew this past weekend and had a fabu time. We did a little shopping and a yummy lunch. My nephew told me more times than necessarily how old his mother is. “Aunt Tara, did you know my mom is 31!” “My mom is older than my dad, did you know that? By YEARS!!” “I told my teacher that my mommy is 31! Are you 31! That’s really old!”. Sis-in-law was not nearly as amused as I was. My brilliant nephew, who knows all about Martin Luther King (the first king of America), also told me that there were dinosaurs until 1980. I was a bit surprised as I vaguely remember 1980. I told him I didn’t see any dinosaurs in 1980 and he told me I probably wasn’t paying any attention. That’s possible, as I’m sure the T-Rex was tiny and easy to miss :-) He couldn’t tell me where the dinosaurs went after 1980. They probably turned 31 and died of old age.

While I was visiting, my brother Homie G called and I got to talk to him. I haven’t talked to him since early January. He told me I was the best letter writer ever! A high complement, let me tell you. I write the kid two to three times a week. If I wasn’t good before I’m good now. His comment got me to thinking about letter writing. It’s a dying art. I love writing letters, thank you notes, and emails. I like blogging too, obviously. I wonder why more people don’t do it more often? Who doesn’t like to get mail, real mail!? By a person that they know…who isn’t asking for money? I’ll probably never understand.

There is no measure large enough to describe my love of mail. And I also love writing letters and notes. In fact, I make a point to send people letters or cards in the mail and to handwrite notes to people as much as possible. I do agree that it seems to dying away and I think that makes it even more special when you get a “real” letter in the mail.
